New Orleans' 9th Ward - January 2006

The team took a day off and explored the 9th Ward area of New Orleans. Left to right:
Top - Cory, Matt, Ben, Justin, Andrew. Bottom - Mrs. Van Kirk, Katie, Aaron, Kristina, Amy.
The devastation in the 9th Ward, adjacent to where the levee broke, was amazing, even months after Hurricane Katrina (all the pictures on this page were taken in January 2006). Entire neighborhoods like this one were obliterated by the storm's fury, with few, if any, buildings left standing.
What the storm did to cars was nearly as amazing as what it did to houses. This car sits under a house that has been moved off its foundation. This car was lifted up by the swirling currents and dropped on top of a fence.
Even the rich didn't escape - this limousine is parked atop a battered pickup truck. This mangled heap of twisted metal is barely recognizable as a car. If you look closely, you can see three cars piled in the remnants of this garage/carport.
