New Orleans' 9th Ward - January 2006

This house was tilted sideways either by the hurricane's winds or by the water that flowed through the 9th Ward after the levee broke. This huge barge was picked up out of Lake Ponchartrain and deposited on top of a school bus, crushing a house that stood on the spot. This house was moved completely off its foundation and into the yard of its next-door-neighbor.
Stories of looting in New Orleans are definitely more than just stories, judging by the inscription on the side of this building. It's unclear exactly what happened to this house. it appears to have been flipped upside down by the powerful currents of water. A roof lies on the ground with the masonry that once supported it scattered across the lawn.
This roof section, in an area a little further from the levee break, appears to have just cracked off the house because of the strong winds. This building was totally gutted because the wind and waves had rendered it uninhabitable. A front porch and the remains of a foundation - with no house in sight.
